Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of soft palate temperature controlled radiofrequency tissue ablation with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in patients diagnosed with simple snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). STUDY DESIGN: This study was conducted with patients who presented to the Otolaryngology Department of Diyarbakır Training and Research Hospital between March 2018 and April 2020. Thirty patients with simple snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were included in the study. While 13 of them had snoring, the others had mild OSAS. Applications were made to 3 regions of the soft palate under local anesthesia. Evaluations were made before the application and at week 6. Patients were evaluated with ESS. Paired t test was used for the statistical comparison of the difference between ESS measurements, and independent t test analysis was used to analyze the difference between the ESS averages between the mild OSAS and simple snoring groups. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients (22 men and 8 women) were included in the study. Thirteen patients had simple snoring and 17 had mild OSAS. When the preoperative and postoperative ESS values of the patients were compared, a statistically significant decrease was found in the postoperative values (p<0.05). ESS values which were 10.5±2.4 preoperatively decreased to 8.4±2.1 postoperatively (p<0.05). Patients with mild OSAS had a significant decrease in ESS values as compared to patients with simple snoring (p<0.05). While the preoperative ESS values which were 9.0±1.4 in patients with simple snoring regressed postoperatively to 7.2± 1.5 in patients with mild OSAS, the ESS values which were preoperatively 11.6±2.4 in patients with mild OSAS decreased to 9.2±2.1 postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Temperature-controlled soft palate radiofrequency tissue ablation is effective in simple snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Temperature-controlled soft palate radiofrequency tissue ablation is an effective minimally invasive treatment option with a low risk of complications. © Science Printers and Publishers, Inc.
