Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To understand the relationship between allergic rhinitis and anxiety/depression, which is common in the community. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and 60 healthy individuals as a control group were included in the study. Men and women were evaluated among themselves. Group 1 was considered as allergic rhinitis and group 2 as control group. Evaluation was done with Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS) and Beck Depression Scale (BDS). RESULTS: In the study, parameters of 60 patients with allergic rhinitis and an equivalent number of control group were evaluated. The mean age of the patients in group 1 was 35.0±9.3 years, and the mean age of the controls in group 2 was 34.9±4.6 years (p=0.902). Of 60 patients in group 1, 19 (31.7%) were female and 41 (68.3%) were male. Of 60 people included in group 2, 22 (36.7%) were female and 38 (63.3%) were male. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of gender distribution (p=0.700). It was divided between group 1 and group 2 as age, gender, marital status, educational status, occupational status, smoking, and alcohol use. In both genders, the mean scores of both BDS and BAS were found to be statistically significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 (p<0.0005). CONCLUSION: Allergic rhinitis is a common disease that can cause significant social problems. In addition to physical symptoms, symptoms such as lethargy, fatigue, somnolence, decreased cognitive functions, difficulty concentrating, and decreased sleep and appetite may also occur. We determined that patients with allergic rhinitis had a high incidence of anxiety and depression. © Science Printers and Publishers Inc.
